Going to the Chicago beaches is a nice free outing for families. It can get crowded quickly on some days but you can still enjoy the water and the sun. Parking of course is always an issue but it can still be an inexpensive outing if you bring food and drinks.

Love the free beaches in Chicago! Even if not swimming, love to people watch, the kids like making sand castles and its like a mini vacation!

We went to North Avenue Beach for the Air & Water Show's practice day, and loved it. The entry to the water is rippled sand, the beach is clean, and the view of the skyline is gorgeous. Drawbacks are lack of shade and parking. We parked in the Lincoln Park Zoo lot, which was pricey at $35 (for 5 or more hours).

We went to Leone / Loyola Park Beach in the Rogers Park neighborhood (Touhy & Sheridan)and found it very uncrowded. The beach near the shore was a bit rocky, so water shoes might be a good idea. Parking was easy - there's a pay lot ($1 per hour) that was almost empty. I'd rather pay for parking for one car than admission to the beach for each person! There's a concession stand, a huge beach area, and even a nice playground for the kids that was at least partly in the shade. Dogs are allowed but must be on a leash.

My favorite beach is Montrose.

I love that Chicago beaches are free - that's the way it should be. North Avenue beach is fun, but we started going to Montrose Ave. Beach once we had kids because it seemed to be less crowded. I'm going to check out some of the other beaches this summer.
