Southwestern Michigan is just 1.5 - 2 hours from Chicago, and offers many options for families to enjoy the great outdoors, fresh air and beautiful fall colors. Here are three great suggestions for hiking and biking:
Kal-haven Trail: This is a 33.5 mile trail with end points in Kalamazoo and South Haven. The trail meanders through wooded areas, past farm lands and over rivers and streams. Trail highlights include a camelback bridge and covered bridge. Trails are great for hiking and biking. There is an 11 mile parallel section where horses are allowed. The staging area for horses is at 67th street and baseline.
Mount Baldhead, Saugatuck: Hike up 282 steps from Mt. Baldhead Park to the observation deck and you can see views of the Kalamazoo River, Lake Michigan and Saugatuck.
Warren Dunes State Park, Sawyer, MI: This park sits on 1,950 acres with three miles of beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline and 6 miles of trails. The rugged dune formation rises 240 feet above the lake and offers spectacular views. On a clear day you can see the Chicago skyline across from the top of Tower Hill sand dune.
