One summer morning in 1852, Fred Graue entered his mill and turned the wheel that opened the sluice gates outside. Water from Salt Creek rushed into the millrace and the wooden waterwheel began to turn for the first time. It would turn the machinery that would grind grain for the next seventy years.

Today, Graue Mill is the only operating waterwheel gristmill in Illinois.

Graue Mill and Museum is dedicated to maintaining a bridge between past and present generations in the belief that understanding our history is vital to our future. The Museum provides programs -- for school children and others -- that include milling, spinning and weaving and living history presentations, as well as artifacts which illustrate the way of life of area residents between 1850 and 1890 and the impact mills such as Graue Mill had on our culture.

Open mid-April to mid-November.

We did a girl scout outing here. It is a nice place to give your child some history and let them enjoy the outdoors at the same time. My 9 year old loved it!

Graue Mill is nice but it's a place to spend an hour at most on a summer or fall day. There isn't much to do but walk around and see the mill. Be careful with really young toddlers though as they get very curious and al little too close to the water!

I think this is a wonderful place for kids! The path around the lake is paved if you have a stroller, the lake is full of wildlife to observe and my kids had a great 'hike'! The museum is fun for kids too. The demonstrations at the mill are interesting and kid-friendly and there are some hands on things through-out. Beware that there is a 'store' when you firsat walk in with candy and toys for sale and that their is an exhibit on slavery in the basement.

Very pretty to walk around and be at peace with nature. I wouldn't bring young kids here. Dawn
