Taltree Arboretum & Gardens is an oasis in the midst of development. Made up of prairie, woodland, wetland and formal gardens, the nearly 400-acre reserve is in Valparaiso, Indiana—15 miles south of Lake Michigan and about 50 miles east of Chicago. Taltree combines more than three miles of trails through wetland, prairie and forest with wheelchair and stroller-accessible landscaped gardens. The Joseph E. Meyer Memorial Pavilion becomes the hub of activity throughout the summer, with concerts, classes and other gatherings scheduled inside the octagonal stone and wood shelter.
The Taltree Railway Garden is an outdoor G (Garden)-scale model railway through a garden that entices visitors of all ages to explore, discover, play, and learn about natural history and horticulture. TheTaltree Railway Garden tells amazing stories of American railroads in the context of a large display garden. The Railway Garden is a safe place where children are welcome to have fun in beginning to develop lifelong habits of nature enjoyment, observation, learning and preservation of green space. Tours and classes for all ages and interpretive hikes for school groups show Taltree’s commitment to education and its vision of promoting the natural biodiversity of the landscape.
