Summer Fun in the Chicago area with Kids

Event Recurring Event
Chicago and Suburbs, IL

Have we got fun for you! Check the kidwinks Events Calendar for a list of daily events for kids and families in Chicago and the Chicago area suburbs. Here are a few of our favorites:

Wagner Farm The Glenview Park District’s 18.6 acre Wagner Farm is one of the last working dairy farms in Cook County and is open to the public for recreation and learning. The farm provides a unique opportunity for families to learn about our farming heritage and experience first hand “the way things used to be.”

Thursday Free Concerts in Lincoln Park Summer means free concerts throughout the Chicago area. The Thursday concerts in Lincoln Park in St. Charles are just one example. Park districts, cities and other organizations host free outdoor family-friendly concerts all summer long. Some are geared specifically toward children, some include other forms of free entertainment for kids such as balloon artists or face painters, and you can sometimes even find concerts that are held in conjunction with free ice cream socials. Check the kidwinks Events Calendar to find out what’s going on near you.

Indian Dunes National Lakeshore The park is comprised of over 15,000 acres of dunes, oak savannas, swamps, bogs, marshes, prairies, rivers, and forests. It contains 15 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline spanning the distance from Gary to Michigan City. Immediately inland from the beaches, sand dunes rise to almost 200 feet in a series of ridges, blowouts, and valleys.

Mundelein Community Center Spray Park Fun is had by all while the kids cool off during the hot summer season. Interactive water features for children age 0-9 years, a sand play area, shuffleboard, and sand volleyball make this attraction a draw for the whole family.

Find many more outdoor activities on kidwinks, including splash pads, swimming pools, and water parks

Millennium Park Millennium Park is a 24.5 acre park in the heart of downtown Chicago. In addition to the regular features like the Cloud Gate Sculpture and the interactive Crown Fountain where kids can play and get wet , the Family Fun Festival makes the Park the place to be for kids of all ages this summer. Every day, from June 9 through September 3 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., family performances and hands-on activities will take place in the Family Fun Tent, located on the Park’s Chase Promenade North.

Perseid Meteor Shower The Perseid Meteor Shower is one of the best meteor showers to observe, producing up to 60 meteors per hour at its peak. This year's shower should peak on the night of August 12 and the morning of the 13th, but you may be able to see some meteors any time from July 23 - August 22.

Free Days at Area Museums Chicago is blessed with top-notch museums, and many host free admission days throughout the year, including in the summer. These free admission days are generally more crowded than other days, but it’s a great way to visit these museums while on a budget. Kidwinks lists free days at the museums on our Events Calendar, so you may click on any day to see whether or not any of the museums are offering free admission. Kidwinks also includes a link to free museum admissions for the upcoming week in each of its weekly emailed Chicago Family Activities Guides.

Kids Bowl Free Kids can bowl 2 free games every day of the summer at participating bowling alleys throughout the Chicago area. Simply register online, select your bowling center, and receive a weekly email with coupons for your kids to bowl free each day of that week.

Student Ball Pass at Brunswick Zone Sign your kids up for one free game of bowling every day this summer – June, July and August. Register online.

Donley’s Wild West Town - Experience life in the style of the Wild West where gunslingers have showdowns, and a train whistles past the Blacksmith's Shop, Print Shop, Jail, Saloon and Sweet Phyllis Gold Mine.

Arlington Park Race Track Sunday Family Days - Family Days include FREE Pony Rides and a Petting Zoo in the park area from 12:00 PM until 4:00 PM.

Spray Park – West Side Community Park - Summer means it’s time to get wet – at the pool, water park or spray park.

Minor League Baseball – Kane County Cougars - Minor League baseball is an affordable and fun way to introduce children to professional baseball.

Pirates Cove Children’s Theme Park - In Elk Grove Village you will find a buried treasure known as Pirate's Cove Children Theme Park.

The Morton Arboretum - The Children's Garden is AMAZING!  Plan to spend the better part of a day here.

TopGolf - Who knew this was so much fun?  You really need to try it.  It's like bowling only more fun for the whole family.  Even the little ones can have a good time.  Jean & Nina and their kids were hooked after trying it once.

The World of Faeries Festival - This is one example of a unique festival you may not have heard about.  There are many more - click for a list of Chicago area famiy friendly festivals going on this summer .

Cascade Drive-in Theatre - During the summer they will often run kid friendly double features.  It is a great way to enjoy a movie the old fashioned way.  They even allow the family dog to come!

Mystic Waters Family Aquatic Center - It is water park time, and this is one you may want to check out.  Looking for others?  Check out our list of  water parks in the Chicago area.

Blackberry Farm - A living history museum with 5 different museums spread across acres.  Admission includes unlimited train rides, pony rides, carousel rides and more.

I use this guide when I am looking for things to do. It is nice to go to one spot for a quick summary of activities. I also like that you can search on different types of activities. For example, all splash pads. This is way better than any other resource.

There is so much to do in the summer but sometimes you can't decide where you want to go. This guide is perfect for that because if you are in the mood for sun or water or indoor activities, you can find something to do.

I discovered Arlington Park's Sunday Family Days with this guide. I always thought Arlington Park was just for adults but there is a lot for kids to do too.

I love this guide because there is so much to do in the summer but when a day comes by and everyone is bored, you can't think of anything. So I go to the guide and see what summer fun is out there and bam, we go to the Arboretum or splash park, or some other great fun place.

I love this guide. We went to Morton Arboretum just yesterday and that's always a fun and beautiful place to visit. We definitely will check out Arlington Park Race Track. Pirates Cove and Faeries Festival sounds very interesting. I know my nephew loves Mystic Waters water park.
