A Tandoor is a cylindrical clay oven used in northern India in which food is cooked over a hot charcoal fire. Temperatures in a tandoor can approach 900°F (480°C). The distinct color of our popular dishes at the restaurant comes from Cayenne, red chili powder and other spices. These appealing colors are formed by the spices, cooked over intense heat. Traditionally "tandoor" dishes are moderately hot, but the level of hotness is toned down to a "mild" taste level, artfully preserving their flavors. Food cooked in a tandoor retains all the juices and taste inside, hence is considered a healthy diet.
Great to have an Indian restaurant in Park Ridge but we had to be creative to find a menu item for a little boy. We were the only people in there for our whole dinner. Even though it is close, my bet is on Ghandi's on Devon in the city.
YUM!!! We had dinner there last night, and everything was absolutely delicious. They have a dinner buffet on Friday and Saturday nights (and a lunch buffet every day, I think) All the items on the buffet looked very good, but I had some favorite Indian dishes that I was craving, so we ordered off the menu. The Tandoori Mixed Platter is HUGE and filled with a variety of their different chicken and lamb options; the Chicken Signature Kabob, which is marinated in a cilantro chili sauce (making it a very bright green!) was a particular stand out. We also had the Palak Baingan (spinach and eggplant cooked with ginger and spices). It was one of those dishes that is so good that you keep eating it even after you're full.
Everything tasted incredibly fresh, and I was excited to see that many dishes can be made vegan style - without butter or cream. Even if you're not vegan (and I'm not!) it's great to know they have 'lightened up' versions, so you can enjoy Indian food more often without blowing your diet!
Tandoor is a wonderful family restaurant with a fabulous and fresh buffet on Fridays! My kids love it. The tandoor chicken is delicious! Highly recommend!
